T-Birds Fall Short In Elliot Lake

By Matt Stefano

On Tuesday, February 10th in a make up home game vs Blind River, T-Birds second year forward Brett Jeffries notched his first career NOJHL hat trick and four goal game leading the T-Birds to a 7-3 victory. His first three goals of the game all came in the opening period to give the T-Birds a 3-0 lead after one and he also became the first Soo Thunderbird to record a natural hat trick in a period since former captain Micky Sartoretto did back on October 8th, 2011 in a 10-2 victory over the Kirkland Lake Blue Devils. With four wins in a row heading into Elliot Lake Friday night, the T-Birds were looking to extend their hot streak.

Boris Katchouk notched his fourteenth just 2:56 into the first from Eric Hillock to put the Soo up 1-0. Trayvon Henry’s ninth from Nathan Campbell and Cole Hepler at 6:46 tied things up at one through sixty minutes.

Shane Woolsey’s power play goal and twenty second of the season from Cole Hepler and Adam Baxter at 4:55 put the Cats ahead 2-1. David Chiarelli’s seventh from Liam Blais and Jason Wilson at 9:49 gave Elliot Lake a two goal lead through two.

Matt Pinder’s sixteenth from Boris Katchouk at 4:01 into the third cut the lead to 3-2. Connor Scott’s unassisted goal and fifth of the season at 13:10 put the Wildcats ahead 4-2. Anthony Miller would bury his twentieth from Boris Katchouk and Owen Headrick with just thirty six seconds to go, but it wouldn’t be enough as the T-Birds fell short to Elliot Lake 4-3 at Centennial Arena giving the Soo its first regulation loss on the road this season.

Brian Kment made thirty three stops in net while Boris Katchouk led the way with s goal and two helpers. Anthony Miller’s twentieth goal tonight also gave him his third straight season hitting the twenty goal plateau.

Next action for the Thunderbirds will be this coming Monday, February 16th on Family Day, as they take on the Sudbury Nickel Barons at 2:00 from the John Rhodes. All families of four can get in for just $15 and all people who follow the Soo Thunderbirds on Facebook and Twitter can pay $5 entry by using the code “Miller”.
