After defeating the Powassan Voodoos 5-2 last night at Powassan Sportsplex, the Soo Thunderbirds were looking to make it a perfect weekend against them as they squared off once again this afternoon at 2:30. It also marked defenseman Matt Busby’s 100th career NOJHL game.
Brendan D’Agostino’s 16th goal of the season at 13:38 on the power play put the Voodoos up 1-0, with assists going to Josh Ibbitson and Jake Staples. Nick Tassone tied things up at one with his 29th at 15:23, from Boris Katchouk and Nick Sicoly. Matt Pinder’s 17th from Anthony Miller put the Soo up 2-1 with just six seconds to go in the first.
With the T-Birds leading 2-1 heading into the second, it would be Hounds 2nd round pick Boris Katchouk extending his goal streak to six games with his 17th at 7:02 from Caleb Boman and Nick Sicoly. Matt Pinder’s second of the game on the power play at 16:48 from Brandon Grandinetti and Owen Headrick put the Soo ahead 4-1 after two.
T-Birds leading scorer Nick Tassone, would notch his 30th goal of the season and second of the game at 5:38 from Boris Katchouk giving the Soo a 5-1 lead. Devin Shell’s 2nd at 19:13 from Nick Tassone was the final goal of the game as the T-Birds went on to a 6-1 win over Powassan and sweep the season series four games to none. Voodoos forward Steve Harland, who entered today’s game on a 31 game point streak was held off the scoresheet.
Mario Culina made 14 stops for his 20th victory of the season.
The Thunderbirds round out their three game road trip on Wednesday, February 25th at 7:30, when they take on the winless Blind River Beavers at the Blind River Community Centre.
