Wolverines and Colts City Champions

It was cold outside, but it was hot inside St. Basil’s as the Junior League Champions White Pines Wolverines hit the court against St. Mary’s Knights and the Senior League Champions Korah Colts faced Superior Heights Steelhawks in the Boys Basketball City Championships.

 In the Junior game first place White Pines would limit second place St. Mary’s to hitting for 6 points in the first quarter while they netted 18.  St. Mary’s would add another 12 points in the second quarter and White Pines would add 17.

 
In the first half of the game Lucas Higham and Alex Foster counted for 33 of the 35 points for the Wolverines and Paul Zappacosta would have 12 of the 18 points for St. Mary’s.

The third quarter was even for the number of points each team and at the end of the quarter the Wolverines was leading by a score of 41 to 24.  White Pines would keep the game in check though during the fourth quarter and the final score at the end of the game was White Pines – 54, St. Mary’s – 33 giving the City Championship to the Wolverines.

The top scorers for the Wolverines were Alex Foster – 23, Lucas Higham – 18 and Tristen Olar – 10 and for St. Mary’s Paul Zappacosta – 15, Davide Pedetello – 7.

The three finalists for the Junior MVP were from Korah – Liam Brescacin, St. Mary’s – Paul Zappacosta and White Pines – Lucas Higham with Lucas being voted the MVP.

The Senior matchup pitted second place Superior Heights against first place Korah Colts.  It was a nail biter of a game which seen Korah get behind Superior Heights for the first quarter by one point and at half time the lead was reversed with Korah having the one point lead by a score of 26 to 25 for Superior Heights. 

 
Trevon Williams would hit for 10 points in the first half for Korah while Lars Moffatt would count for 6.

 By the end of the third quarter the Colts and Steelhawks would be even at 35 each but Korah would turn up the heat in the fourth.  It would take a little over five minutes before the Steelhawks could hit the net for points while Korah would add 10.

 
Coming down to the wire and the pressure on there were quite a few fouls made by Superior Heights and at the end of the game the Korah Colts would be named the City Champions with a score of 53 to Superior Heights Steelhawks 42.
 
Korah’s top scorers of the game were Trevon Williams – 16, Anthony Ivey – 14 and Jonah Fogg – 12.  For Superior Heights the top scorers were Craig Daniel – 9, Lars Moffat and Andrew O’Brien with 8 each.

The Referee’s Trophy was presented to Sam Ivey from Korah, with the other finalists of Brian Smith from St. Basil, White Pines – Isaiah Graber, Superior Heights – Jackson Zach-Coneybear and St. Mary’s – John Hackett.

For the League Senior All Stars they were:  White Pines – Isaiah Graber, St. Mary’s – John Hackett and Dexter Holden, St. Basil – Brian Smith and Noah Creedon, Superior Heights – Lars Moffatt and Jake Cruise, Korah – Sam Ivey, Anthony Ivey and Jonah Fogg.

Sam Ivey from the Korah Colts would be voted the Most Valuable Player and the other two finalists for the award were Isaiah Graber from the White Pines Wolverines and Lars Moffatt from the Superior Heights Steelhawks
