In November of 2014 officers from the Technological Crime Unit received complaints that were initiated from a social media website indicating a person in Sault Ste. Marie was using that website to distribute child pornography.
After a lengthy investigation officers arrested a 15-year old male on the 20th of February and charged him with one count of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Making Child Pornography.
The male appeared in bail court on February 20th.
As being part of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service works diligently with numerous agencies throughout North America to enforce and actively work on crimes involving children on the internet.
Officers from the Community Relations and Crime Prevention Section as well as the High School Liaison Officers educate our youth on the risk and dangers from the internet.
Parents/guardians also need to play a role in protecting our children. By visiting sites such as the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and Cybertips, parents can arm themselves with information and assist in education our youth.
