The Soo Greyhounds came out with fire and determination and dominated game 2 of the Western Conference Quarter Finals by a convincing score of 8 to 2 over the Saginaw Spirit. Penalties for the Spirit led to 5 goals being scored on the power play with the remainder at even strength.
Bryan Moore would get a power play goal to put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard at the 9:40 mark of the first period.
In similar fashion to the game one the night before Justin Bailey would get a breakaway and score on Saginaw’s net minder Evan Cormier.
Nick Ritchie and Michael Bunting would add to the tally for the first period giving the Greyhounds a 4 – 0 lead. Greyhounds’ net minder Brandon Halverson stopped 3 shots in the first while Cormier had 24 shots on goal.
Zach Senyshyn would give the Greyhounds a 5 to 0 lead early in the second period but Saginaw would cut down the lead on a power play goal by Artem Artemov a little over two minutes later.
The Greyhounds kept the pressure on early in the period by keeping control of the puck in Saginaw’s end for a little over three minutes with the Greyhounds being able to make three line changes during that time while wearing down the Spirit who didn’t have a chance to make any changes.
Michael Bunting would add to the Greyhounds lead at 8:50 and again Saginaw would answer with a goal by Michael Holmes at the 14:17 mark of the second period for a score of 6 – 2. The Greyhounds outshot the Spirit by 19 to 7 in the period.
In the third period Justin Bailey and Bryan Moore would get their second goals of the night with both scores being on the power play to round out the game total of Greyhounds 8, Spirit 2. Shots on goal during the third period were close to being even but the overall total shots for the game had the Greyhounds with 52 and the Spirit 18.
Game 3 of the Quarter Finals continues in Saginaw on Tuesday, 31 Mar and Game 4 on Thursday, 2 Apr. Game 5 is scheduled for the Sault on Friday, 3 Apr.
