With the fifth and deciding game of GNML semi finals action held at the Rhodes Tuesday, the Soo Thunderbirds midgets wanted nothing more than to punch their ticket into the finals after dropping two games in North Bay after grabbing a 2-0 series lead on Essar Centre ice.
Brendan Gillis put the Soo up 1-0 after the first on the power play with his 3rd of the playoffs 12:15 in from Zach Taylor and Jared Fanti.
Matt MacKay’s 5th of the postseason from Nolan Makkonen with 9:16 left put the T-Birds ahead 2-0 after two.
A shorthanded goal by Finn Seguin just under half way through the third from Charlie Iserhoff and Colton Point cut the lead to 2-1. Then with Colton Point on the bench for the extra attacker, the Trappers would tie things up at two with just 1:08 left courtesy of Devyn Martel’s 3rd of the playoffs from Joe Whittet and Eric Allair.
?After a scoreless ten minute first overtime session, Zach Senecal scored just 3:40 in on a break as the T-Birds would go on to a 3-2 double overtime victory over the North Bay Trappers and win the semi finals series three games to two.
Joey Roberts recorded the victory in goal for the Soo.
GNML finals action begins with game 1 Friday, March 6th at 8:15 when the T-Birds travel to Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena to take on the New Liskeard Cubs in a top two team battle.
