Tonight the Soo Thunderbirds Midgets faced off against the New Liskeard Cubs in game 1 of the Great North Midget League finals. These two teams also finished as the league’s regular season cream of the crop.
Cayse Ton opening the scoring on the power play with his 2nd of the playoffs at 5:16 from Justin Brazeau and Marshal Nikitin. Zach Taylor tied things up for the Soo at 9:51 with his 1st of the playoffs unassisted.
After a 1-1 first period, Zach Taylor would put the T-Birds ahead 2-1 at 10:47 with his 2nd of the night from Brad Thrower and Brendan Gillis.
With the Soo up by one heading into the third, it would be Brad Thrower getting his 4th of the post season just 2:53 in from Jared Fanti and Zach Taylor to put the T-Birds up 3-1. Colin Chartrand’s power play goal and 2nd of the playoffs cut the lead to 3-2 before Matt MacKay’s empty net goal and league leading 6th of the post season sealed the deal as the T-Bird midgets grabbed game 1 doubling up on New Liskeard 4-2.
Joey Roberts recorded the victory in goal for the Soo.
