The Soo Greyhounds hosted their 2015 annual team awards banquet on Friday night at the Delta Waterfront with one former Soo Thunderbird earning recognition. Medric Mercier was one of eleven Hounds to receive a specialized plaque along with a game puck for milestones made this season.
Medric earned a milestone award for netting his first career Ontario Hockey League goal back on October 8th, 2014 vs the Sudbury Wolves during a home game at the Essar Centre. The Gloucester, Ontario native, who was selected in the 7th round (138th overall) by the Hounds in 2012, signed with them on April 29th, 2013, before being assigned to the T-Birds for the 2013-2014 season. During last year with us, Mercier nothced 4 goals including a pair of game winners, along with setting up 6 others through 31 games with just 4 penalty minutes. He led all NOJHL defensemen in goals with 4, during the the 2014 postseason, along with 2 assists and just 4 penalty minutes in 14 playoff games. All 4 of his goals came in the finals against the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
The 6’4, 202 pound defenseman was also called up for a pair of contests with the Hounds last season, where he notched his first career OHL assist on March 17th, 2014 in Saginaw, along with drawing two penalty minutes. During his first full Ontario Hockey League regular season this year with the Greyhounds, the eighteen year old scored 4 times and set up 10 others through 45 games along with collecting 21 penalty minutes.
