Greyhounds Double Up on Otters

Soo Greyhounds

The Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead against the Erie Otters in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final only to have the Otters make a comeback to tie the game in the third period.  The Soo put the game into high gear after that to take the first game of the playoffs.

Bryan Moore would get the first goal of the game at the 6:13 mark of the first period.  On the fourth shot by the Greyhounds Jean Dupuy would slip the puck behind Devin Williams to give the Soo a 2 to 0 lead.

Connor McDavid, on a breakaway, was stopped by Halverson keeping the score as it stood.  Less than a minute later Nick Ritchie would get robbed by Williams and almost 45 seconds later Darnell Nurse had a good chance on a hard slap shot from just inside the blue line.

With Nick Ritchie in the penalty box Justin Bailey got a short handed breakaway for a chance to increase the Greyhounds lead but was stymied by Williams.  Later in the period Jean Dupuy would get the gate for an Interference call giving the Otters a 5 on 3 but Halverson came up large to keep the score 2-0 at the end of the first period.

Otters Troy Donnay gave the Greyhounds an opportunity to increase their lead and with 8 seconds left in the penalty Justin Bailey would add to the Soo tally making the score 3 to 0.

Connor McDavid would get a power play marker late in the second period to cut the lead to 2 with the score 3 – 1 at the end of the period.

Penalties were the downfall to the Greyhounds losing a two goal cushion as Connor McDavid would score another power play goal at 0:16 of the third period and then another power play goal to tie the game at 3 at the 1:08 mark.

The Greyhounds came back with a lot of fire and speed wearing down the Otters with a goal by Gabe Guertler, his first post season goal to put the Soo back into the lead.  Nick Ritchie would get his 11th post season goal at 14:17 of the period.

With an empty Otters net Guertler would deposit his second goal of the game at 18:20 giving the Greyhounds a final score of 6 to 3.

The next game between the Greyhounds and Otters is on Friday with game time of 7:07.
