The PUC would like to inform residents that after careful excavation of the HWY 550 washout site, it can confirm that the intake main for the City’s water supply has not been compromised. This confirmation was only possible after the PUC was able to inspect the transmission main and found it to be undisturbed. The integrity of this main was the top priority for the PUC as they assisted the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and their contractors in ensuring the stability of this critical supply main during this emergency road reconstruction project.
This watermain supplies the City of Sault Ste. Marie with over 50% of the water it uses. The cause of the washout was linked to a failed culvert that impacted the surrounding infrastructure. A replacement culvert has been installed and MTO is continuing with the road reconstruction. During this process, HWY 550 is still operational.
The PUC would like to thank; the MTO for their prompt response and diligence in addressing the situation. The PUC would also like to recognize the dedicated efforts of AECOM, Transfield Services and Palmer Construction throughout the reconstruction process. Furthermore, the PUC would like to thank the residents of Gros Cap for their patience and understanding during this period.
