After doubling up on the Cochrane Crunch 4-2 last night in game three, the Soo Thunderbirds had no time to waste as they were right back in action for game four tonight at the Tim Horton Event Centre, looking to take a commanding 3-1 series lead heading back home on Sunday. Two goals in the first period was enough for the T-Birds as they blanked the Crunch 2-0 and are now just one victory away from clinching their third Copeland Cup McNamara Trophy in franchise history.

Devin Shell opened the scoring in the first just 2:20 in from Matt Mitchell followed by Brett Jeffries at 12:46 from Nick Tassone and Owen Headrick. Mario Culina made twenty eight stops for his third shutout of the postseason and now leads the NOJHL playoffs in goals against (0.91) and save percentage (.959).

Game five goes back in the Soo on Sunday, April 19th at 7:30 from the Essar centre.

Alumni notes:

Former T-Birds forward Nick Pastorious picked up his first career Ontario Hockey League playoff assist and point with the Barrie Colts in Thursday’s 4-3 double overtime loss to North Bay and former T-Birds defenceman Colin Miller had set the Manchester Monarchs record tonight for most points by a defenceman in a regular season with fifty two, picking up an assist in a 3-2 win over the Portland Pirates passing Slava Voynov (2010-2011) who had fifty one points. Miller’s nineteen goals on the season has also set the Monarchs record for most goals in a regular season by a defenceman passing Slava Voynov (2010-2011) who had fifteen.
