At the Regular Board Meeting held on Tuesday April 7, the Algoma District School Board Trustees approved the closure of William Merrifield Public School at the end of the 2014-2015 school year and that the students be accommodated in nearby elementary schools effective September,
Through the fall and winter of 2014/15 four public information meetings were held. Following these meetings the Wm Merrifield Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) met and produced a final report based on public input received at the meetings.
Senior Administration prepared their Administrative Recommendations Report after carefully following the deliberations of the ARC public meetings and the recommendations in the ARC Final Report.
The ARC Report and Administrative Recommendations Report were distributed to Trustees at the January 27, 2015 Board Meeting.
These documents, along with supporting documentation collected over the Accommodation Review process, were made available to the public for review 60 days before the recommendation which came at the April 7th Board meeting.
Both the ARC and Senior Administration recommended that the students and programs currently housed at William Merrifield V.C. Public School be consolidated into nearby, neighbouring public schools effective September, 2015.
A transition plan will be implemented to facilitate a smooth transition of the students involved to the receiving school(s).
Algoma District School Board’s Administrative Council expresses its appreciation to the local Accommodation Review Committee members for their commitment, numerous evening meetings, and high level of communication with the school and community stakeholders.
