On Sunday, May 24th,2015, the doors were opened to a monumental work in progress. The Huron Superior Catholic District School Board offered a select group of folks from within education, theatre arts and the media community to take a peek inside the Theatre Centre taking shape at St. Mary’s College. That is to say, the new site for St. Mary’s College on Second Line East at Pine Street.
HSCDSB Director of Education, Mr. John Stadnyck and Artistic Director for Theatre SMC, Joseph Lauzon, led a tour of the space that is transforming into a state of the art Theatre and Performing Arts Centre.
Joseph Lauzon shared that “The stage is 40 feet deep, making it the largest stage in The Sault.” The acoustics were showcased as those who gathered for the theatre centre tour were treated to a group of choristers from within the HSCDSB, “You were the first people to perform onstage at the new site of Theatre SMC” said Joseph Lauzon to the singers.
There is a current fundraising campaign ‘As One’ underway with a goal of raising $2 million to support the new Theatre and Performing Arts Centre.
‘Although the Ministry of Education has generously funded our new SMC school construction, funding does not cover enhancements such as our performing arts theatre ($2 million) or artificial turf field ($2 million).’ source HSCDSB.
One School, One Theatre as described in the booklet handed out to those present for the tour shares ‘Knights, Saints and Royals have a tradition in the performing arts. Help our future performers continue to excel by supporting a 500 seat theatre, which will showcase talent, culture and community events. Acoustical treatments, specialty lighting, seating, fixtures and a sound system will make future Knights and the community proud of Theatre SMC.’
Building on a 20 acre site along Second Line (at Pine St.), the school is moving towards the goal of welcoming students ‘As One’ in September 2015 from St. Basils Secondary, St. Mary’s College, Holy Angels Learning Centre, and Mount St. Joseph College. The view from the cafeteria windows is spectacular. As St. Mary’s College, ‘One School’ continues to take shape, the new site for Theatre SMC will no doubt, be a busy place for performing arts and artists from within the District of Huron-Superior, Algoma, and beyond.
