LITTLE BIG SHOW – Patrons and guests mingle over hors d’oeuvres, live piano music, and more than 100 5×7 canvases donated by regional Michigan and Ontario artists during a reception on April 24 in the Lake Superior State University Arts Center gallery.
The evening opened the second annual 5×7 Art Show, a juried competition cosponsored by LSSU and Chippewa County Sunrise Rotary Club. Patrons viewed and purchased original works to benefit Arts Center gallery exhibition programming and the Sunrise Rotary Club’s mission to support global clean water projects and other local initiatives, such as supplying dictionaries for third-graders, supporting competitive swimming events, and hosting winter family fun nights. This year’s theme was, joy.
Taking first-place honors and receiving $300 was Susan Johnson from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., for her mixed media work, Jumping for Joy; second place with a prize of $200 went to Stephanie Moran of Sault, Mich., for her work that uses Pebeo Vitrail paint, Cheese; third place with a prize of $100 was given to Jaclyn Schierbeek for her acrylic paint and pressed flowers, Spring of Joy. Schierbeek, from Holland, Mich., is an LSSU student majoring in biology with a minor in marine and fisheries science. She also took honorable mention for, Fl-owl-er, as did Allison Youngs for her photograph, Let’s Dance.
Pieces, each available for purchase for $50, are on display through May in the Arts Center gallery, 12-4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
Next year’s 5×7 show – with the theme, time – will have a reception on April 22, 2016. Contact gallery manager Sharon Dorrity at [email protected] for show entry and sponsorship details. (LSSU/John Shibley)
