T-Birds Blanked By Canadians


For the first time since 2012, the Soo Thunderbirds were back in the RBC Cup tournament and had their first match up Saturday against the fifth ranked team in the nation Carleton Place Canadians.

The Canadians got on the board first at 7:29 courtesy of Andy Sturtz goal from Tyson Stewart and Jordan Larson to take a 1-0 lead after twenty.

Wesley Baker made it 2-0 just 4:51 into the second from Willie Brooks until Jordan Larson’s goal at 18:37 made it a 3-0 game with assists going to Andy Sturtz and Alex Robinson. Mario Culina stopped Canadians forward Bryce Van Horn on a penalty shot at the 19:29 mark to keep it a 3-0 game through two.

Jordan Larson’s second of the game from Andy Sturtz and Alex Robinson at 13:30 was the final goal of the game as the T-Birds fell 4-0 to the Carleton Place Canadians and go to 0-1 on the tournament.

T-Birds goaltender Mario Culina turned aside thirty three shots.

Next action for the Soo will be Monday, May 11th at 8pm aagainst the Melfort Mustangs from the PCU Centre.
