Relay for Life

The Canadian Cancer Society would like to invite the community to attend the 15th annual Relay For Life on June 19th 2015. Opening ceremonies start at 7:00 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Center. This year’s theme is “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N’ Roll” and there will be entertainment for all ages to enjoy!

Sault Ste. Marie’s Relay For Life is now a 6-hour, non-competitive event where teams and individuals alike can come together to walk the track – helping to eradicate cancer with every step. We invite all cancer survivors in our community to attend the Survivor Reception beginning at 5:00 p.m. and Survivor Victory Lap to follow at 7:00 p.m.

In 2015, there will be an estimated 196,900 new cases of cancer in Canada and 2 out of every 5 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime. “Within six hours, the length of Relay For Life, roughly 132 people will be diagnosed with cancer. This event is our greatest opportunity to stop cancer in its tracks, reduce these numbers, and defy the odds,” says Judy Cruise, Relay For Life Crew Chair.

The Canadian Cancer Society encourages teams and individuals to set achievable fundraising goals. All proceeds raised will fund life-saving cancer research, the Wheels of Hope Transportation program, as well as peer support, advocacy, prevention, and information services, so that fewer Canadians are touched by cancer. For example, $50 provides a ride for one cancer patient to their life-saving treatment, $125 connects one cancer patient or caregiver with someone who has been there and can provide information and support, and $300 covers the cost of the cancer cells needed for one research project. Every dollar makes a difference and we appreciate all that the Sault Ste. Marie community contributes to the fight against cancer.

Join us for one of our Relay For Life training walks taking place every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Rocky DiPietro Track to register for only $15! This is a great opportunity to exercise, socialize, and prepare for Relay For Life!

Relay For Life is the largest cancer fundraiser in our community and the Canadian Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. Everyone is welcome to stop by, join the fun, and support our cancer survivors, caregivers, and participants. “The sense of community that you feel at Relay For Life – there’s truly nothing like it”, says Judy. At dusk, our Luminary Ceremony will take place, where candles are lit and placed around the track. Purchase a luminary and honour those close to your heart. This is your opportunity as a friend, loved one, or survivor to save lives by going the distance.
