Chamber Hopeful that Parties will Find Solution to Passenger Service

The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce is disappointed to hear of the announcement by CN and the ACR Stakeholder Passenger Service Working Group that passenger service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst will cease.

Monica Dale, President of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce notes that the news to discontinue the service so abruptly, is going to place a great number of businesses and residents in a very awkward situation and many may not have time react or get their affairs in order before July 15th when the service stops.

The passenger service is an imperative link for many lodges and fishing resorts along the rail line as well as outfitter and guiding services. Many area residents also use the service to gain access to cottages and camps that are in remote areas north of Sault Ste. Marie.

Dale notes that the Chamber has watched the recent developments carefully as all parties involved worked to identify and secure a new operator.

“We are encouraged that all of the parties involved, including CN, the ACR Passenger Service Stakeholders Working Group and Transport Canada have been in regular discussions and that they have indicated that they will all continue work to explore short and long-term solutions to resolve this situation” says Dale.
