Conservative Failure on Passenger Train Avoidable : Morrison

Set against the backdrop of an empty rail track, Skip Morrison local NDP candidate along with two Northern Ontario NDP MP’s lambasted the Conservative government for not making the ACR passenger train service a priority.

Morrison was joined by long time NDP MP Charlie Angus and Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes at the ACR train depot Monday morning.

“It’s simple, Bryan Hayes was missing in action on this file” Angus said.

“It was avoidable” says Morrison “but for the intense disinterest of the Conservative government and their local representative , the ACR would still be operating”

New Democrats such as MP Carol Hughes joined a broadly representative group of stakeholders fighting to maintain the service, which was put in jeopardy when the Conservatives cut a small but essential subsidy.

“This comes down to a failure of leadership” said Hughes, “the Tories dismantled vital regional infrastructure – a successful transportation route that helped sustain at least $38 million in economic activity while the local MP sat on the sidelines”

“They just don’t get it” Angus said in a press conference Monday morning. “while the Conservatives’ failed plan in actually costing jobs, look to the New Democrats like Skip Morrison to defend Northern Ontario economy”

Watch the video for scathing remarks from Hughes and Angus on the performance of Local Conservative MP Bryan Hayes on the matter.

  1. April 14 Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced that the federal government has restored a $2.2 million subsidy that will allow the Algoma Central Rail passenger service to run until March 31, 2015.”With the subsidy restored CN will continue to operate the service.
CN is the responsible one in this mess.

Skip Morrison, should not be listening to Charlie Angus and Carol Hughes these two ass clowns just made Skip look uninformed.

I am not a Bryan Hayes supporter, but it was Bryan Hayes who worked on getting the subsidy restored,He was not missing in action on this file as claimed by Charlie Angus.

Carol Hughes said “This comes down to a failure of leadership, “the Tories dismantled vital regional infrastructure – a successful transportation route that helped sustain at least $38 million in economic activity while the local MP sat on the sidelines.

This is also a lie and I demand that both Hughes and Angus apologize to Skip Morrision and MP Bryan Hayes.”It was CN who dismantled this not the Tories. The subsidy is still there CN is in charge.

  2. Really? Since when has any government cared about a private company? Even NDP could not have a say in what CN is doing which is removing all passenger service. Nice try buy as much as I dislike the PCs, the government cannot pressure or buy out the train.
