The Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association Provides Four Educational Bursaries to Local Students

23rd Annual Harvey Buchan Memorial Golf TournamentThe Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association held its 23rd Annual Harvey Buchan Memorial Golf Tournament on August 7, 2015 at Crimson Ridge Golf Course.  The proceeds from this tournament allowed the association to provide bursaries to four local students beginning their post-secondary education.  Molly Campbell, Chelsey Foucher, Rocky Krancevich and Gabrielle Rouleau were presented with their bursaries in memory of Harvey Buchan.  Up until his passing in 1992, Harvey was a local construction industry leader and long-time supporter of the Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association.  The local construction association has been giving these educational bursaries away since 1993.

“This is a shining example of our members giving back to the community they do business in,” stated SSMCA manager Adam Pinder.  “We had a fantastic turn out, filled with tremendously generous member firms who entered teams, sponsored holes and donated prizes all in a united cause to give back to the community.”

The bursaries are funded solely through the sale of hole sponsorships, which were completely sold out this year.  Hole sponsors for this event included: Avery Construction, Elliot Engineering Inc., Gough Masonry, Green Grass Yard Care, Henderson Metal Fabricating Co. Ltd., Ideal Colour Contracting Ltd., Life Breath, McLeod Bros Mechanical Inc., O.C.P. Construction Supplies Inc., Permanent Electric Inc., Pioneer Construction Inc., Red Star Electric Ltd., S&T Group, Steel Speed, Sun Life Financial, Tulloch Engineering Inc., Viotto & Sons Construction Inc., and Winmar.

Pinder said that plans have already begun for next year’s tournament, which he hopes will be even better.  He also stated his desire to see this long running tradition continue throughout his career as the SSMCA manager.  “A post-secondary education is extremely valuable. Our members truly support this initiative.  We plan to be giving away these bursaries for many years to come.”
