Yesterday while visiting solar panel manufacturer Heleine Inc. in Sault Ste. Marie, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau announced the Liberal Party of Canada’s Plan For Sustainable Growth in Northern Ontario. As part of that plan, a Liberal government has pledged to invest $200 million more annually to create sector-specific strategies that will support clean technologies in the forestry, mining, and energy sectors. The plan also includes a commitment to invest in clean technology producers that work to battle Canada’s most pressing environmental challenges that adversely affect our air, water and land.

“This commitment by Justin Trudeau shows his belief in the ingenuity, expertise and work ethic of Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario’s entrepreneurs, businesses, scientists and workers”, said Terry Sheehan, Liberal Candidate for Sault Ste. Marie and area.

This plan will have a Liberal government collaborate with the private sector, provincial and territorial governments, and research institutions to create real meaningful job opportunities for the middle class and those working and aspiring to join it.

Sheehan comments “Sault Ste. Marie and area is in a great position to capitalize on this investment. As Mr. Trudeau acknowledged yesterday, we are already known as the ‘alternative energy capital of North America’. We have two great post secondary institutions who already have close working relationships with our world class forestry research centres and many of its scientists and researchers. Our area is home to several innovative entrepreneurs who have already invested plenty of time and resources into clean energy technologies, who would welcome the assistance from a serious federal partner in a Liberal government.”

“The Conservative government of Mr. Harper and Mr. Hayes placed most, if not all, of their economic cards the past several years in the price of oil and we are now feeling those affects in Sault Ste. Marie. I, much like Mr. Trudeau, believe in building relationships, not tearing them apart. When elected, I will work with those who have the expertise to make sure Sault Ste. Marie and area continues to be a leader when it comes to battling climate change and creating technologies and products that protect current investment and jobs and develop new ones.”

Upon the election of a Liberal government, Sheehan’s plan includes immediately striking a committee comprised of leaders in our area including MPP Orazietti, Mayors and Reeves, First Nation Chiefs, both Post Secondary Institutions, representatives of the business community, scientists, along with the Economic Development Corporation and Innovation Centre to come up with a clear, concise strategy and direction for prioritizing opportunities and manifesting results.
