A Perfect Day for a Pow Wow

The weather was great, the atmosphere was friendly, and all in all it was a perfect day for a Pow Wow.
According to Chief Dean Sayers, a Pow Wow is a gathering of the aboriginal people to celebrate every aspect of their heritage. They also invite one and all to come and witness the celebration.

Pow Wows are the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships, and making new ones. This is a time method to renew Native American culture and preserve the rich heritage of American Indians.

One of the most important part of it is the Grand Entry. During the Grand Entry, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the grounds. The flags carried generally include the Canadian and U.S. Flag, Tribal Flags, the POW Flag, and Eagle Staffs of various Native Nations present.

Dancing is also a big part of the PowWow. Women wear different types and colours for different reasons. Reyna Tijerina tells saultonline that it’s a healing dress for older people, people that are sick and the elderly. It also signifies the coming out for first time dancers like Ava and Tessa Sewell.
