Commemorating 400 Years of French Presence in Ontario

Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is proud to Commemorate 400 Years of French Presence in Ontario. The Franco-Ontario flag was raised for the first time in our region at the University of Sudbury 40 years ago on September 25, 1975 – Two reasons why we should recognize the important role of Francophone in our area.

Detachment members across our region are proud to pay homage to Franco-Ontarians, to remember their history and the advances they made. We encourage members of our communities to check with their local detachment for events taking place in their area such as a ‘Raising the Flag’, an ‘Open House’, partnering with existing events in their community and more.

North East Region OPP has 22 detachment locations in designated French Language Service Areas as defined by the Act. The 142  uniform and civilian employees in positions designated as bilingual can offer services in English and French.

Our goal of the French Language Services Act is to have French Language Services “equally accessible” as English language services in our designated areas. The North East Region OPP is confident that we meet this standard most of the time but do acknowledge that we must continue to work to improve its French language capabilities.
