Flock of Mascots Spotted on Campus

(LSSU/John Shibley)

Almost four decades of Lake Superior State University mascot history pose in front of the Norris Center’s anchor on Sept 7 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. From left is Shawker the Sea Hawk (1983-2000), Fog Horn the Sailor (2000-12); and three successive Seamore sea ducks: the current version since 2012, version 2000-12, and version 1979-83.

When LSSU was a branch of Michigan College of Mining and Technology (Michigan Technological University), the athletic teams were known as the Hornets. The Lakers formed when Sault Branch of MCMT spun off in 1969 into Lake Superior State College. Run a Web search for “lssuseamore” to follow leads on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube as Seamore hosts home games, visits friends on- and off-campus, and recruits kids to a burgeoning fan club.
