Yesterday at both 9 am and 7 pm, Steelworkers Local 2251 held two all candidates’ forums/debates at the Marconi Hall. Bryan Hayes, Conservative Candidate for Sault Ste. Marie was not in attendance for either.
“As someone who is the sitting Member of Parliament to not show up for a debate, hosted by the union local of the city’s largest and most important employer is shameful”, says Terry Sheehan Liberal Candidate for Sault Ste. Marie and area. “Mr. Hayes should be embarrassed.”
Essar Algoma Steel, and its employees are the engine of our community. Mr. Hayes likes to boast that he is the Chair of the Steel Caucus, but then is a no show at a campaign event focused directly on the steel industry and its employees. Earlier in this campaign he demonstrated that he has a poor knowledge of the ever important steel dumping issue and now he doesn’t have the decency to attend these forums.
“There is no doubt that he was instructed by the national Conservative campaign to not attend. Either that, or he just doesn’t care enough about our most important industry,” said Sheehan.
Throughout this campaign there have been reports in the national media that the Conservative party has been discouraging its candidates from attending debates or taking calls from the media.
Sheehan comments, “Mr. Harper doesn’t speak to most reporters or many nonpartisan everyday Canadians, I guess his candidates don’t either. I was glad to attend the 2251 forums, they provided for the opportunity to discuss some issues very pertinent to our community.”
