Phoenix Rising and Womyn 4 Social Justice invite the community to participate in this year’s Take Back the Night march. Every year across Canada and around the world since the early 1970’s women have taken to the streets at night to protest the violence that occurs against women and children. Take Back the Night was a slogan first used as a theme for a national protest march in San Francisco.
Here in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, we have a tradition of holding our own march during the third week of September. This year the Take Back the Night March will be take place on Thursday September 17, 2015 starting at Phoenix Rising at 6:30 p.m. and ending at the Elks Hall, with ceremonies to follow.
The number of people who participate in this march grows each year. The Take Back the Night March is an occasion for women to celebrate our strengths and courage, to commit to continue to work towards change, to collectively shatter the silence, and to speak out against violence. It also encourages victims of violence to move forward and away from their abusive situations and provides hope and promise for their continued survival.
