The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) will open its newest elementary school in 2017. That school now has a name following unanimous approval by the Board of Trustees of a School Naming Committee recommendation.
St. Basil Catholic Elementary School will greet its first students in September of 2017.
A Board committee met on a number of occasions to discuss naming options for the new elementary school which will see the school communities from St. Ann, St. Bernadette, St. Pius X and St. Theresa consolidated at the former St. Basil Secondary School site. With input from the Catholic School Councils from all four schools a consensus was reached.
“The conversation seemed to always come back to maintaining a connection to the Basilian Fathers and their many contributions to Catholic Education in Sault Ste. Marie. It is certainly appropriate in this case to preserve such a tradition,” said School Naming Committee Chair, Maria Esposito.
As superintendent of the four schools involved in the consolidation, Esposito has a strong working relationship with each school community.
“I appreciate the effort put forth by the committee and all four school communities during this process. The Board whole heartedly supports their decision,” said HSCDSB Chairperson, Leslie Cassidy-Amadio.
