On Saturday, September 5th, the Soo Thunderbirds kicked off preseason action at the Rhodes against the Elliot Lake Wildcats in an 8:00 p.m. clash. The Wildcats headed into this evening’s action after defeating the Soo Eagles 3-2 following a Saturday afternoon clash at the Rhodes.

The Thunderbirds opened up their preseason with a 2-1 win over Elliot Lake. Matt Caruso had the opening goal for the Soo at 11:28 of the first and Joe Newhouse’s power play goal at 10:09 into the second, proved to be the game winner.

The matchup was played as two twenty five minute periods.

“It was good to score the game winner but all that matters is that we got the win and the goal is just a bonus for me,” said T-Birds defenceman Joe Newhouse.

Newhouse, who scored the game winner, came over as a free agent this offseason from the SIJHL’s Thunder Bay North Stars.

“It was good last year but this is a completely different team, different atmosphere and it’s all business here,” Newhouse said. “Sault Ste. Marie is awesome, lots of fun, lots of good people here and I like it.”

Brandon Gordon and Braydon Cunningham split time in net combining for 17 saves in the T-Birds victory.

Jaren Bellini, Gage Stephney and Jake Behse all had assists for the Soo, while Elliot Lake’s lone goal was scored by Artur Terchiyev from Chad Lopez just 51 seconds into the second.

The T-Birds will now conclude their preseason tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. when they take on the Soo Eagles at the John Rhodes.
