A report to council from the new Fire Chief calling for a reduction of 20 firefighters has caused an uproar on social media and the Sault Ste. Marie Firefighters Association.
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Chief, Mike Figliola will present his report to council on Monday and the President of the Association , Marty Kenopic wants to have the matter deferred by council allowing for the union to prepare its case. Kenopic said he only learned of the contents of the report Wednesday following news of the report at a meeting this past Monday.
Currently five senior positions have not been filled and Kenopic said he believes public safety is at risk with more cuts.
The report suggests the cuts would come in the form of attrition as senior firefighters retire over the next three years.
Figliola believes there are too many firefighters and not enough EMS workers in Sault Ste. Marie and resources should be directed towards more EMS staff.
Council will learn of the full report in their council packages late Thursday for this coming Monday night’s council meeting.
