On behalf of Algoma University’s Community Economic and Social Development’s Environment and Community Resilience class and we will be hosting a Winter Apparel Clothing Drive.
We are asking the local community of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas to donate any gently used Outdoor Winter Apparel: jackets, gloves, scarves, mittens, and hats. Anything you feel will be suitable to help our students survive our winter climate. This clothing drive will benefit the students who where not properly informed about our climate and are in need of winter clothing . This is one of the ways for students to get a head start for the winter climate . When this weather sets in, students are often well into their school year and have begun to feel the squeeze of life as most students do and do not have much for disposable funds. This is one of many problems for our students, and certainly does not help them feel welcomed by our community. Students in need are left to either go further into debt or to layer sweaters, but never really feel the comfort of warmth an appropriate winter wardrobe brings.
We wanted to find a way to help, which is where our project came in. Our action project will be a two-pronged approach. We will be accepting donations of the above apparel, then will host an event for students to attend and receive winter weather apparel. We will also be approaching the University’s Student Union to have a more appropriate orientation provided to all new students. This will come with a more detailed outline of what students should know, “What to expect when you accept” Algoma University.
The event will be held at Algoma University SpeakEasy next Wednesday evening. If you have any questions or would like to donate please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or at [email protected]
