Two local players from the Sault United Football Academy (SUFA) were chosen to attend a
Showcase Tournament in Grand Rapids over the past weekend. Brianna Scarfone and Brett
Lewis are seeking University playing opportunities.
They have routinely placed players on NCAA D1 & D2 schools across the U.S. Their teams
have won state and national championships and have one of the best coaching staffs around.
It is important that we only send players who we feel can compete at that level (Howe). We do not want to set them up for a negative experience.
Both players had to adjust quickly to the pace and skill level of the competition and as new
players, get used to new team mates at the same time. While it was a difficult ask, both Brianna and Brett adjusted very quickly and finished with strong games on the Sunday. The Director of Alliance was impressed with their level of play and how well they fitted in so quickly. There were quite a few University scouts and coaches on hand. Now comes the waiting game. Brianna has another year of eligibility left and has been asked to take further part with Alliance in upcoming programs.
It was an exciting tournament, both fast and physical. Many of the players on Alliance teams,
already have been provided scholarships prior to this tournament. SUFA operates the
northern portion of this program, covering the U.P. and Algoma region. This is a fantastic
opportunity for young players who aspire to play at higher levels. SUFA trains the kids here
and provides local teams for travel. For those who are capable of playing at higher levels, we
offer them the chance to train and play with Alliance Academy teams. A number of our
younger players have been asked to come down. Recently 8-year old Elijah Beaton
impressed the Alliance people and has been asked to play with their state level team in the
spring. The U9 team SUFA sent to the Dragon Cup a few months back, finished tied for first
place in their age group, against top-level competition.
SUFA is very proud of both Brianna and Brett for very credible performances. Next up for
SUFA is the West Ottawa Showcase Tournament on December 5th. Two years ago four
players were offered scholarships at Canadian Universities! We hope to reach that mark
again. High school girls in grade 11 or 12 that may be interested in taking part in this
tournament, should contact SUFA at ([email protected])
