A recent donation of $5000 from United Steelworkers Local 2724 puts the Sault Ste. Marie Veteran’s Commemorative Monument (VCM) another step ahead to construction of the project in Rowswell Park near the riverfront.

USW Local 2724 represents supervisory and technical staff at Sault Ste. Marie’s Essar Steel.

VCM Committee Chairman Clyde Healey expressed project Planning Committee thanks by saying, “On behalf of our committee, veterans and supporters we thank Local 2724 and their members for support of this very important initiative. Labour has always produced a quality product for the defence and protection of our soldiers and once again today they are assisting us. This is a great example of how union locals, businesses, organizations and individuals can be a part of this community initiative to recognize and honour our veterans.”

USW Local 2724 President, Lisa Dale said, “It is important that USW Local 2724 honours the men and women who have served for our country. Our nation owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to our veterans. We need to raise our voices together to say “Thank you for my freedom” and by making this donation, it speaks volumes to all veterans to say that simple ‘thank you’.”

The VCM project is designed to recognize all men and women who have volunteered to serve with the Canadian, Allied and NATO Armed Forces. The structure and bricks purchased for individuals will provide a formal and lasting tribute to those who served and are serving in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area.
