Iconic Sign Comes Down

A once vibrant area, Gore street was home to one of the city’s most iconic buildings, the Princess theatre. Opened in 1917, the Princess was one of the Sault’s biggest theatres in it’s day. Sadly, as many other theatres closed, the “Princess” ended its run as movie theatre in 1980’s in the early 1990’s several years later it was transformed into The Princess nightclub.

Today, the building sits empty, but the sign that remained with the building for over 6 decades came down Tuesday. Superior 7 crews were seem removing the sign today.

The sign will sit in storage and could be used again. There are no current plans for the building itself.

Gore street by the way is the next big project for the downtown area. A revitalization development is hoped to bring new life to the once popular street downtown.
