Saultonline.com has learned that West Jet could be returning to the Sault sometime in 2016, that information has not been confirmed as of yet from the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Corporation. “at this point that is only a rumour, we have spoken with airlines about possibly serving Sault Ste. Marie or different routes from Sault Ste. Marie, but there is nothing that has come to fruition at this time.” Terry Bos, CEO Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation.
The airport began an impressive renovation last spring with a one million dollar investment from the NOHFC and another million dollars coming out of Airport Corporation reserves for construction of four new airline counters, new office space and an expanded passenger screening room.
“We have begun the renovations on the terminal as was announced and those renovations will be completed by February/March at which time we will have counter space available to house an additional airline. This will at least allow us to pursue an airline better then we are able to now as there would be space available for them to operate out of.” Bos told SaultOnline.com
West Jet pulled out of the Sault in 2003 citing low consumer interest. Sault Ste. Marie is currently served by four other carriers, Air Canada, Porter and Bearskin along with Sunwing.
