Purple Lights Support Two Important Causes This Month

Purple Lights Campaign - Pancreatic Cancer

With the cooler fall temperatures upon us, we would like to remind everyone that November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month.  Two years ago, the diagnosis of our father, Don Muio, prompted us to get on board with Pancreatic Cancer Canada in an effort to help raise awareness of this terrible disease, the difficulties with detection and the poor prognosis following diagnosis.  The Sault has shown incredible support of the foundation’s Purple Lights Campaign over the last two years and we encourage everyone to again dig out their purple lights and hang them in support of this wonderful cause.  On a personal note, we drew hope and inspiration from seeing the many homes and businesses around the city glowing in purple.   This year, for us and others who have lost a loved one to this disease, the lights will serve as a tribute, while at the same time, remaining a sign of continued support and hope for others that are battling pancreatic cancer.

Again this year, City Hall will raise the Pancreatic Cancer Canada flag for the month of November, as a reminder to constituents of this cause.  Friday, November 13, 2015 is World Pancreatic Cancer Day, where advocates around the globe unite to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic Cancer continues to be the fourth leading cause of cancer death in Canada and most people who develop pancreatic cancer do so without any predisposing risk factors.  Despite claiming nearly as many lives each year as breast and prostate cancer, Charity Intelligence Canada, cited pancreatic cancer as the most seriously underfunded cancer, receiving less than 1% of research and charitable funding (Source: Pancreatic Cancer Canada)

Woman AbuseIn lighting our city purple, in addition to raising awareness of pancreatic cancer, we are also showing support for the Soo’s Freedom Sisters, a domestic violence awareness group run by survivors, who run a similar purple lights campaign this month.  We encourage everyone to shine those lights for both of these important causes!
