Faculty and fifty-two students from Laurentian University’s School of Architecture in Sudbury welcomed members of the Riversedge & Mill Market Teams to their workshop space in downtown Sudbury to present their vision for the future of the Mill Market Farmers Market.
Having visited Sault Ste. Marie twice this Fall, toured the Mill Market site and interviewed vendors & customers, students unveiled architectural plans and three dimensional renderings for critique by their cohorts, Riversedge Developments and leaders from regional architectural firms.
“We’ve been working in Sault Ste. Marie for four years now, and every project we develop, we centre our approach on what the community wants, what they ask us for,” says Veldman.
A selection of the student’s designs will be available for the public to view in the new year at the current Mill Market, and Riversedge is hoping the designs further inspire public collaboration.
The students are part of a multidisciplinary team helping to prepare the market for its eventual move to a larger, permanent location.
The current Mill Market is open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, year round in the former municipal fish hatchery building and features locally-grown fresh produce, sustainably raised meats, homemade speciality foods, handmade artisanal crafts and a host of community events.
