The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce will partner with SHAW TV to host a Candidates debate for the upcoming Ward 2 by-election. This debate will be held in Council Chambers at the Sault Ste. Marie Civic Centre and will be televised live on SHAW TV Channel 10 on Tuesday, January 26 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce President, Monica Dale will act as moderator for the debate. Questions will be posed on an alternating basis and each candidate will have the opportunity to rebut all questions asked.
Dale notes that while the actual voting process for the election will be limited to only Ward 2, the election is still of importance to all members of the community. She states that “Ward 2’s new Councilor is going to be part of a larger team (City Council) that is going to be tasked with some very significant issues and the outcomes will impact everyone in the community. As such, constituents from all municipal wards should be interested in the candidates stances on the issues.”
“The Sault offers a wealth of opportunities, but we are acutely aware that a number of challenges are also facing our community,” Dale adds. “A number of outside factors are impacting several of our largest employers and that is driving higher local unemployment. This in turn, is going to have a direct impact on the local economy and every member of City Council is going to have to keep this mind when it comes to municipal budget. At the same time, there are issues on the agenda such as development charges and the municipal sign by-law that have potential to disrupt local business and construction. The Chamber, as well as local residents and business people, are going to be looking where members of City Council fall on these items.”
Individuals attending as part of the audience for the debate should note that by-election campaign materials will not be permitted. There will be no posters, signage, brochures or any type of electioneering allowed anywhere within or outside the Civic Centre during this event.
