2015 Ski the Trails, Skiers take off from the starting line

It’s time to Ski the Trails! On Sunday, February 21st 2016, avid and recreational skiers and snowshoers will gather at Hiawatha Highlands in support of the healthcare in their community. In its Fifth Year, this event is encouraging skiers and snowshoers to register, collect pledges and challenge both themselves and others to reach new goals. Co-chairs of the event, Doctors Dopp and Curran, encourage participants to reach new personal bests in distance or time, try something new and reaching higher goals in fundraising to help support our local healthcare.

Co-chairs Drs. Curran and Dopp established this event in 2011 to help support the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF). SAHF is the primary source of funding for medical equipment at our local hospital. This community’s generosity, through support and donations, funds the purchase of equipment our hospital requires to maintain and increase care. The Doctors focused on this cause to ensure that their friends, family and everyone else in our community has access to excellent healthcare, close to home.

Registration and pledge collecting for the event can be completed online. Participants and donors can reach the site by visiting www.sahfoundation.com/ski. Participants can register, create their page, form a team (optional) and share this page with friends, family, through social media and email to reach their fundraising goal. Individuals are asked to raise a minimum of $50 while Teams (max 3 people per team) are asked to raise a minimum of $100. The site has the ability to receipt donations instantly through email. All participants will have a chance at some great prizes!

Along with Skiing and Snowshoeing, this year’s event is including Fat bikes, weather permitting. The bikes will be allowed on the Crystal Creek System. Also information about the new Ski the Trails Treasure Hunt for Ages 10 and under can be found on the website (www.sahfoundation.com/ski).

Scotiabank is the presenting sponsor of this event and will be matching pledges collected up to a total of $5,000. Registration and pledge forms (paper copies) can be picked up at either of the local branch locations, as well as at Hiawatha Highlands or the SAHF office. Scotiabank staff will be on site totaling online and offline pledges, registering participants and preparing everyone to take on the trails. The event venue has been generously donated by Hiawatha Highlands and the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club.

From 10am – 2pm, there will be a Ski the Trails pancake breakfast at the Sugar Shack (1100 Fifth Line E.) supported by the Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie. All participants will receive a breakfast for free. Prices for non-participants are as follows: Adult – $10, Kids (6 – 12) – $6 and Kids (5 and under) – FREE.
