Don’t fall for this Facebook scam

8

The internet can be a beautiful thing, so much information at our disposal, news almost instantly and the web has certainly made the world a lot smaller. The internet can also be a place for scammers. There’s a ton of them. No doubt you have probably received an email saying you have inherited a great sum of money through a legal office in Nigeria or perhaps you have had Canada Revenue Agency send you a notice of unpaid taxes.

Some people unfortunately do fall for these scams and end up losing thousands of dollars.

The scammers can also fool people on social media. This is a story of one such case after this reporter accepted a friend request on Facebook.

Sometimes people send me friend request to contact me regarding a potential story or what have you but I’m always weary of friend requests from complete strangers. At any rate, a few seconds later this person is sending me private messages on Facebook.

Below is the full conversation. As soon as this person started to send me messages, the red flag went up especially since she said she was from Facebook. I decided to play dumb and play along…

Walker Ruth Beatriz

Craig Huckerby

i can never lie to you, you are like a father to me

okay

I then started to show my true colours and identified myself as a reporter and that I was one to him or her. I posted a note from Facebook about this so called facebook lottery.

Craig Huckerby

Facebook Lottery or Promotion – If you receive a message stating you have won a large sum of money from a Facebook lottery or special promotion, then you are likely dealing with an advance fee scammer. They require you to send a ‘processing fee’ to receive your funds. If it were legit, they could just deduct the fee and send you the winnings.

Walker Ruth Beatriz

this are the past winners

The person sends me this photograph

fed-ex

I almost laughed out loud on that one…

No response from me

Walker Ruth Beatriz

so i cant lie you okay

once you are done with the payment the delivery department will give you a call

okay

Walker Ruth Beatriz

the delivery department will give you a call right now okay

Sure enough my phone rings. It’s a call from Florida, I answer and the voice on the other end is a deep heavy Jamaican accent “Hello? this is (can’t make out his name) from Fed Ex. You have to pay the fee in order to get the cheque.”

I tell him that I have no intention of sending Fed Ex any money and if it was a legit lottery then deduct my “fees” from my winnings and send me the balance.  The Fed Ex agent then tells me they can’t do that and I must send them the shipping fee.

I tell the “agent” that won’t happen and then proceed to tell him that I’m no fool and he should be ashamed of himself.

I then get another photo sent to me.

cheque
Walker Ruth Beatriz

have the scanned copy of our check
Walker Ruth Beatriz

this the scanned copy of our winnings check

okay

this is %100 real and legit

I end the conversation and unfriend this person

Sault Ste. Marie police constantly warn the public of online scams like this, but bottomline, if it s too good to be true, it usually is.  If you haven’t entered any lottery or draw , then you haven’t won anything.

  1. I love the certificate. Obviously an overseas (possibly Nigerian) scammer, with limited knowledge of how things work in N America. (Since when is Barack Obama the president of FedEx?).
The phrasing, too, betrays this person as someone for whom English is a second language (“I can not lie,” instead of “I would not lie.”)
And, as Craig said, if you won a significant amount of money, they could certainly deduct the $560 “fee” from the total amount.
By the way, just how much is $950.000.00 anyway?

  2. no lottery in the world would ask you to pay something to get a prize and since they are pretending to rep a company’s promotion BY LAW you don’t have to pay anything to get a prize. I tell them to get a real job since being a crook isn’t suited for them

  3. Sooner or later, in one way or another, facebook WILL come back and bite you in the ass. No one needs to know any of your business, I never could understand the hype or the need for it at all.
How many years was it not around and everyone did just fine?
Even email is not secure, they tell you up front they will use your personal info.
I trust only in the telephone, although I’m not familiar with skype, maybe it is ok, who really knows?
