Highway Traffic Act Amendments – Pedestrian Safety

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising motorists of the new legislative amendments to the Highway Traffic Act sections 140 and 176 which have become into force January 1, 2016. The Act will require drivers to stop and yield the entire roadway to pedestrians and school crossing guards before proceeding at pedestrian crossovers and school crossings.

A school crossing is any pedestrian crossing facility where a school crossing guard is present and is displaying a school crossing stop sign.

A pedestrian crossover is a pedestrian crossing facility identified by specific signs, pavement markings and overhead lights in combination with pedestrian-activated flashing beacons. It is not a crosswalk at a signalized intersection.

Any contraventions of this Act will result in fines of $150.00 to $300.00 dollars.
