This is a notice from The Sault Ste. Marie Real Estate Board and its membership in regards to a scam that is currently circulating the Sault and surrounding area.
It has come to our attention that one or more persons in areas in and out of the country are posting “For Rent” ads on local websites pretending to be the owner of a listed or previously listed property.
This person(s) are posting the property for rent and requesting that a very short rental application be filled out as well as first/last and/or a deposit be sent or wired to them prior to viewing the property.
It is said that upon receiving the funds, the keys for the property would then be mailed out for renters to move in.
No background, reference or credit checks are ever requested either.
In the last week, at least three Realtors(R) have reported to the Board office of this scam.
The Board Office and it’s membership would like to take this opportunity to warn the public that it is not normal practice for landlords and that if you or anyone you know has fallen victim to this scam, please contact the local police immediately.
