The old Royal Bank building at the corner of Wellington St. West and Boydell Place sure isn’t what it used to be. Today, the space has been transformed into the thriving headquarters for O.C. Hair, Bath & Body Co. Established in 2013, OC has been building a brand, creating naturally sourced products for hair, bath & body, and has become nationally and internationally recognized as a standard for natural beauty products.
“Pretty much everything you see today was made yesterday and into late last night.” said Tyler. In fact, the team had been working until 2:00 am making products in the downstairs OC lab on the day saultonline stopped by. Minimum amounts of stock are kept on shelves at the retail location which is a constantly evolving work in progress. “Bath bombs & liquid hand soaps are currently our biggest seller at the store.”
All of OC beauty products are formulated and tested with the support of a bio-chemist. The downstairs area of the old bank building is the laboratory where the recipes are designed, developed and created.
“OC started originally, designing & developing products for the professional sector only. We created our dead sea salt foaming scrub and soak for professionals, which got into the hands of several other professionals world-wide. Things went quite quickly from there. We had to make a decision about where to take the company.”
2012 was a year that saw the OC team investing time in research & development. “We officially launched OC Hair, Bath & Body Co. in 2013.” said Tyler. The retail location opened in late fall of 2015, and has been a tremendous success. “We had a very busy Christmas season.”
OC Hair, Bath & Body products can be found in over 1,000 retail and professional locations across North America. An impressive list of locations carrying OC brand products include Great Wolf Lodge(s) ‘Glama Gal’s’ 11 Tween Spa locations in Southern Ontario & Gran Spa (a large spa franchise company). “Gran Spa purchases the micro-dermabrasian for all of their spa locations” said Tyler.
“Product Sunshine is very important to us. We manufacture products for Project Sunshine which is part of Sick Kids.” shared Franco Cuglietta (The Hospital for Sick Children, also known as Sick Kids, is a major paediatric hospital located on University Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.)
“10% of all of our retail kids line goes right back into Project Sunshine. We just shipped out 4,000 bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand soap.” said Franco.
Body butters, sugar scrubs, hand soaps, bath bombs, hair products, beard care products & more can be found at the retail outlet. “We release new products every week or so.” shared Tyler. Apple & cinnamon, frosted vanilla bean, citrus fruits, cotton candy, creamy coconut, cherry blossoms, papaya, mango, mountain man beard, various sugary concoctions are a portion of what a person could find in products at the retail outlet. Globally sourced essential oils are infused into recipes as well, all lending themselves to the beauty products conceived and created in-house. “22 different essential oils are used in recipes for the OC line of products.” shared Tyler.
Candles are developed in a separate lab in the downstairs area of the building, as are the homemade & hand poured soap loaves which can be purchased by the slice. “Candles and soap loaves & slices are a very popular.” shared Tyler. “Everything is made and poured in small batches.”
Much of the business for OC is coming from the international marketplace including Europe and the U.S. This local enterprise is turning frosted vanilla beans into triumph in a very difficult sector of the economy to gain traction in. Bath, hair, skin care, spas, salons. It’s a big world out there. OC is the only professional dealer for Dannyco Professional (Salon and Spa), and are the north-eastern ontario distributor for China Glaze Nail Polish. The retail location on Wellington St. W. has an area dedicated to professionals & educators (Sault College among them) in the beauty sector.
“We want to welcome all professionals and individuals to come and visit our Wellington St. West retail location.” There is lots of parking in the area just off Boydell Place. Sophie, a professional esthetician, on staff at OC, can answer all your questions about OC Mountain Man beard shampoo, and introduce you to the U Scoop area & all the rest of the diverse assortment that makes up the OC brand. Saultonline wishes Tyler & Trina Onofrio and Franco Cuglietta, every success as they continue to grow OC Hair, Bath & Body Co. into a global powerhouse.
