A snow storm had perfect timing for the 100 plus participants in the 2016 Polar Bear Swim. The weather, Super Bowl and a new date for the swim may have resulted in lower turnout. The lower than normal attendance didn’t lack in carnival spirit though.
Up to this morning Sault Search and Rescue wasn’t sure if the ice would be strong enough for the event due to the milder than normal winter, well, up to now. Heavy snow showers moved in as the first of the swimmers took the plunge in the St. Mary’s River.
The swim was moved to opening weekend this year to accommodate the new Passport to Unity event Next Sunday as a closing event for the carnival.
