Lake Superior State University’s official mascot, Seamore the Sea Duck, slips into an official photo of court royalty crowned for the 48th annual I-500 snowmobile endurance race on Feb. 6 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. From left are Michaela Pine-Bennett, Natalie McGuire, Chelsea Kronemeyer (this year’s I-500 queen), and Raelynn Terrian.
The Indy 500-inspired race sees more than 50 teams from throughout the US and Canada complete 500 laps around a one-mile oval track made from 1,800,000 gallons of water. Up to 20,000 spectators pump about $3.2 million into the regional economy during the long race weekend, this year being Feb 4-7.
Lake Superior State University’s audio-visual department streamed this year’s race to the world via the Internet. Run a Web search on “2016 I-500 Livestream” to view archived video.
