The SUFA Soccer Academy is sending five teams to a Futsal Tournament (5-a-side indoor), this coming weekend (Feb. 26/27th) in Grand Rapids. This is the second year in a row for SUFA and the number of teams has increased from two teams in 2015, to over five this year.
Futsal is a hard, indoor surface version of the sport, played on a basketball-sized court with five players on each team. It is fast and exciting and is credited with developing the skills of some of the top players in the world, such as Lionel Messi and Christiano Rinaldo.
SUFA is working with Alliance to spread the development of high-level soccer in northern Ontario and northern Michigan. Recently the Director of the Alliance Academy (Abrahm Shearer) came to the Sault to put on a training session to help the players going to the tournament. Alliance has great connections with many programs and universities in the US.
SUFA is sending the following teams, which include players from Sault Soccer in Michigan as well: U9/10 Boys – U11 Girls – U15 Girls – High School Boys – Men’s Senior team, consisting of former Academy grads and players from the LSSU men’s team.
In addition, SUFA is sending a number of players to play on Alliance teams, where we do not have enough in those age groups. In all, over 50 players will be going down.
The teams are having scrimmages on Thursday night at “The Tech” at 130 Wellington St. E. (formerly SMC and Lakeway). The games will run from 6-8:30 PM for anyone who wishes to come out and take a look at Futsal. All are welcome.
