Local curler Chris Glibota has won the Northern Ontario Provincial Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. Glibota, and his teammate Megan St. Amand from Thunder Bay, defeated Team Gordon/Gordon from the Copper Cliff Curling Club by a score of 9-0 in Sunday morning’s final. They opened with two in the first end and had steals in each of the next five ends until Gordon/Gordon conceded the game early.
Team Glibota/St. Amand represented the Community First Curling Centre at the provincial championship that was held in Little Current. They went through the 4-team double round-robin competition undefeated, finishing with a record of 6-0.
Team Glibota/St. Amand will now represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship being held in Saskatoon from March 28 – April 2. The national two-player championship is in its fourth year of existence. The International Olympic Committee recently approved mixed doubles as a medal sport for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The winner of the Canadian championship will play in the 2016 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Sweden where the first qualifying points to determine the field for South Korea will be up for grabs.
