OPP Warn Public of Counterfeit U.S. Money

The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been advised that counterfeit United States currencies have been passed in our neighbouring communities.

The currency involved is of the $50 denomination. Several bills have been used to defraud businesses in the Blind River area. Log on to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Training and Education link at https://uscurrency.gov/training-module.

Local retailers and the general public are reminded to be alert and to carefully inspect all currency to verify that it is authentic.   For further instruction regarding counterfeit prevention of Canadian Currency the “bank note” section of www.bankofcanada.ca  offers valuable information.

If you suspect that a Canadian bill is counterfeit look at the appearance of each security feature carefully.

  • Touch the bill and feel for raised ink
  • Tilt the bill to see color changes
  • Look through the bill for hidden images

Anyone with relevant information about this fraud is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310 1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
