Searchmont Resort, in partnership with Sault College, are excited to announce that the Sault College Utility Arborist Program will be on site at Searchmont Resort for the Programs practical applications. The two year program from Sault College focuses on advanced topics in the maintenance and removal of trees, equipment use, tree climbing and utility arboricultural sciences, with a strong emphasis on safety and working in a team environment.
This year, Searchmont Resort has provided an excellent location for the programs practical
demonstration sessions. Students are performing vegetation trimming and clearing, under the supervision of college instructors, around the resort property. Specifically, they are targeting trees growing close to chair-lifts or power-lines feeding the hill lighting.
Matt Baker, Manager of Field Services for Great Lakes Power Transmission LP had this to say of the opportunity:
“The location is ideal from the perspective of providing training opportunities where the students are able to apply the principles of directional tree pruning/trimming and danger tree management, while being free of the hazards posed by high-voltage power lines. We are happy to have the opportunity provided by Searchmont Resort in training our apprentices, and to contribute to the maintenance and beautification of such a valuable recreational area for the city of Sault Ste. Marie”.
Searchmont Resort is honoured to play a part in helping these students to successfully complete their program, and ultimately achieve their Certificate of Qualification. We are also excited to be continually building our relationship with Sault College; a partnership that saw over 650 Sault College students take advantage of Searchmont Resort season passes through the 2015-16 season and we are continually exploring other opportunities for the mutual benefit of Searchmont Resort, Sault College, and the communities of Sault Ste. Marie, and Searchmont.
“The Searchmont Resort Board and Staff are stoked to continue our Partnership with Sault College. This is an excellent example of how Searchmont Resort can be used for practical educational applications, and we look forward to exploring additional opportunities in the Future. “– Colin Wilson, General Manager of Searchmont Resort.
