Algoma University Alumnus and former all star basketball player Vyron Phillips is now pursuing a career in Mixed Marital Arts. The Minneapolis Minnesota native views Sault Ste. Marie as his second home and maintains close relationships with fellow teammates and Algoma Thunderbirds coach Thomas Cory. Vyron has a degree in Sociology and has worked with at risk youth in our community.
Vyron trains locally out of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and works closely with owner Chris Giallonardo when he is in Sault Ste. Marie. Aside from his 6-3 pro MMA record, Vyron has other credentials including Gold medals in Ontario Boxing and Jiu Jitsu tournaments respectively, as well as gold medals in Manitoba jiu jitsu. Vyron’s career has also taken him to Tokyo where he fought in Pancrase, one of mixed marital arts oldest tournaments/promotion company. He is currently a fighter for Hard Knocks Fighting with an upcoming bout in Calgary scheduled for April 22.
Vyron is currently a finalist in URShow.tv’s contest to fight former boxing champ Roy Jones Jr and the chance of winning $100,000. The fight will be aired on URShow. Tv’s PPV on March 20th. Also on the card will be Ken Shamrock vs Dan Severn in an MMA bout, Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio in a pro wrestling match and Chael Sonnen vs Michael Bisping in a grappling match.
