Get ready for an extra dose of cute this weekend as 112 of Northern Ontario’s youngest ski hopefuls compete in the U12 Championships at Searchmont Ski Resort.

Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, Elliot Lake will all join the Searchmont Ski Runners on Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th. Racers as young as five years old and up to eleven years old have been training hard to brave the 750 foot vertical terrain Searchmont offers, in hopes of bringing home a medal. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded in each age division. Ribbons will also be awarded for positions 4th to 10th.

Race organizers have been diligently planning a fun filled weekend for racers, coaches, parents and volunteers in true Searchmont fashion. The opportunity to host this championship race only happens once every five years. These organized races are extremely important to both Searchmont Ski Resort and also to the community of Sault Ste. Marie as hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and other businesses benefit from our visiting neighbours from all over Northern Ontario.

Searchmont General Manager, Colin Wilson is looking forward to hosting the last race of the season. “The Searchmont Ski Association Board and Staff would like to welcome all of the participants to the U12 Championships. We are excited to host these exceptional athletes and wish everyone the best of luck!”

This race season has been somewhat challenging for all of the hills across the North with limited snow fall and unusually mild temperatures. Thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated and provided over 20 cm of fresh powder this past weekend and the hill is set for a smooth and safe race. Only a small portion of the hill will be utilized leaving the remaining runs open for the public.

Race clubs have one main objective – to provide young ski enthusiasts the opportunity to learn the technical skills of the sport in a team environment with plenty of encouragement and support from their families and friends. Spectators are welcome to join in the cheering and cow bell ringing at the finish.

Let’s all join in to support our local ski team SSR, as well as show our friends from Northern Ontario how much we appreciate their participation. The smiles on their young faces as they cross that last gate to the finish line is the biggest reward.
Searchmont Ski Runners live by the following motto: Work Hard, Ski Fast, Be Humble.
