A Sault Ste. Marie female athlete is going places, but she needs help to get there.
Mother, Lindsey Gioia writes SaultOnline.com about her daughter, her accomplishments and goals.
“Shea-Lynn is a 16 year old high school student who is extremely athletic and already very accomplished. When she was just 13 years old she qualified to compete at the Reebok CrossFit games in California. She made a place for herself that same year on the Team Ontario basketball team, but had to step down due to qualifying for California. She has also made a name for herself in the sport that she truly loves, track and field. To Date Shea-Lynn has won the trophy for Female Athlete in her age division for the past 4 years.” writes Gioia.
Shea-Lynn had her first experience at Nossa last year in grade 9, winning her events which took her to OFSSA in Toronto where she tied with a few girls for second in high jump. She has also competed in the Legion track and field which takes place in Sudbury at Laurentian University for the past 4 years. This past year she set a new record and again won all of her events earning her a place on the provincial track team.
Gioia said , most people know there is no track club in Sault Ste Marie and the facilities (Jo Foreman track) is extremely outdated and only contains a track and sand pits. The club in Toronto also makes a great effort to have these kids compete and be seen by Universities giving them opportunities for scholarships. With all that being said, Shea-Lynn would love the opportunity to train in Toronto but seeing as we are so far away, travelling costs will start piling up.
She competed with the team in London Ontario and is currently ranked second in Ontario for running long jump. Shea recently received and offer from a track and field program in the Toronto area. They were very impressed with her performances and would like to have her train with them.
“My husband and I give our children (three daughters) every opportunity we possibly can and both work very hard at our jobs to do so. I work for the Catholic School Board with Special Needs Children and my Husband works for Essar. We save every penny to do for the girls but the challenge of all of this coming up with such short notice poses a challenge with the cost of travelling to such an expensive city.” Gioia said.
She says the family has donated to many causes over the years and now hopes Shea-Lynn will be on the receiving end.
” Generosity never goes unnoticed and we cant wait for our turn to give back to someone else in a situation like hers. This is a link to the go fund me page we have set up for her.”
